Neil Young's archive page features the cover of a live album documenting a solo performance at the "Shakespeare Theatre" in Stratford, Connecticut in January 1971. "This is the earliest known film of one of my concerts," writes Neil Young. It was compiled from material from various sources. In addition to the original filmstrips and 16mm prints, there are also excerpts from the German TV series "Swing In", for which the concert was filmed at the time by Dutch director Wim van der Linden. Some of this footage had already been used by Young to film a then-unfilmed concert at Toronto's Massey Hall, where he played an almost identical set. The soundtrack, Young goes on to write, was edited by producer John Hanlon and helped him achieve sonic perfection. "The result is one of the cleanest acoustic performances we have in the archives," he says. "Young Shakespeare" is better than "Live At Massey Hall," he says, because it's a quieter performance without the festive atmosphere of his native Toronto. "Young Shakespeare" is a special event.
