"Eternal" dokumentuje jedne z najważniejszych występów na żywo w karierze Joy Division, w tym dwa wcześniej niewydane koncerty z Hope & Anchor oraz Acklam Hall, a także trzy dotąd niesłyszane nagrania z The Factory, Lyceum i Moonlight Club (z 2 kwietnia). Znalazł się tu również ostatni koncert zespołu z High Hall w Birmingham w 1980 roku, podczas którego muzycy po raz pierwszy i zarazem ostatni wykonali na scenie utwór Ceremony. Zestaw gromadzi niezliczone źródła dźwięku – od nagrań z publiczności i miksera po międzynarodowe audycje radiowe. Zawiera 16 kompletnych nagrań audio z koncertów na 14 płytach CD, a także około 2 godziny i 20 minut nagrań wideo na żywo na jednej płycie DVD, nagranych między marcem 1979 a majem 1980 roku, zaledwie dwa tygodnie przed tragiczną śmiercią Iana Curtisa. Jakość dźwięku tych źródeł jest bardzo zróżnicowana.
