The album offers a little bit of everything: disarming melodrama and explosive riffing in opener "Fafner's Gold", animalistic simplicity in the ferocious "Crack The Sky" and epic fury in first single "Raven's Flight", and grim, bold storytelling in "Ironside" and "Skoll And Hati". In other words, Berserker is an album with all the hallmarks of Amon Amarth: the Swedish metal band is still raging and raging as ever, but somehow they have evolved sonically, sounding more mature without neglecting metal and its emotional power. All of this is best summed up by the album's near-title song, the historical epic "The Berserker At Stamford Bridge", which tells the story of the Vikings in their final battle against the English army in 1066 in immense colour from the perspective of a heroic warrior. The album's lush production also marks an undeniable step forward for the Amon Amarth sound. Berserker was recorded in Los Angeles with famed producer Jay Ruston (Anthrax/Stone Sour). After their first professional demos with Swedish metal icon Peter Tägtgren and Ruston, the band headed across the Atlantic to record their latest recordings in Los Angeles with a new approach. "For me, it's Amon Amarth 2.0 now," explains vocalist Johan Hegg. "Here's what we've done: we've given ourselves the space and opportunity to explore other sides of our musicianship and the band as a whole. If you're happy with what you have, why continue? We've always wanted to experiment with new ideas and find new ways of doing things to create a bigger and better show, so we've tried to improve every aspect of the band.
