It is a concept album based on African culture and was the band's last album with singer Max Cavalera. The album was recorded at Indigo Ranch in Malibu, California with producer Ross Robinson, who also produced their previous album Chaos A.D. Roots was the first album by the band to feature bassist Paulo Jr. and drummer Igor Cavalera, Max's younger brother and replacement for founding member Igor Cavalera. Music critics hailed the album as Sepultura 's heaviest and most aggressive album. The album was a commercial success, reaching number 26 on the Billboard 200 chart and selling over two million copies worldwide. The album's lead single, "Roots Bloody Roots", is one of the band's best-known songs and is cited as an influence by many heavy metal bands. Roots is considered a classic album in the thrash metal genre and has been cited as an influence by many bands including Lamb of God, Hatebreed and Slipknot.
